Big Game Hunting
Waterberg Wilderness safaris conducts most of its big game hunting in the area of 75 000 hectares,
which is privately owned, adjoining, and open with the famous Kruger National Park. The reserve has
a healthy buffalo population of over 2400 buffalo, and due to very selective hunting, (used mainly
as a management tool), there is exceptional trophy quality available due to the gene pool being
part of a 5 million acre open system.
Accommodation is in an historic old family safari camp, which has served as a base in the wilderness for four generations. The style has not changed much over many decades and holds the old school charm of thatched rondavels and a central mess area.
The buffalo hunting is exciting and with large populations of predators and lions in the reserve some exciting moments can be enjoyed. Over the past few seasons some exceptional buffalo trophies have been taken with our guests. The buffalo are allocated to three different categories.
- Ancient, worn down old bulls that are often aggressive and tricky,
- Big buffalo bulls with a spread of 39” and under
- Massive trophy bulls with horns measuring well into the 40’s
All hunting of buffalo is both challenging and exciting, no matter what the horn size is. They are a
tough, worthy adversary, where any negligence or carelessness can exact a harsh retaliation. The true
greatness of the hunt is that it takes one into wild country where you create your own destiny.
Waterberg Wilderness Safaris conducts hunts in both Zimbabwe and Tanzania with good friends who run exceptional operations in those countries.
